CRMU constructed its own cable television system in 1982. On August 6, 1996, the voters of Coon Rapids overwhelmingly approved by a 87% majority the formation of a new communications utility "CRMU Localink", and put control of the utility under the Board of Trustees.

Today, CRMU is in the process of developing a (HFC) hybrid fiber-optic coaxial network. This state-of-the-art telecommunications network is designed to appeal to anyone needing advanced telecommunications and computing capabilities. The network has the capacity to trasmit voice, video and data to and from targeted locations throughout the community.
