CRMU's electric utility was established in 1937 when $114,000 of bonds were sold to purchase the system and to install 398 kilowatts of generating capacity. Today, CRMU has expanded to include partial ownership of the 624 MW Neal 4 generating facility located on the Missouri River. Around 70% of CRMU's annual electrical requirements are supplied by hydro-electric dams on the Missouri River operated by the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA).
