The Coon Rapids Municipal Utilities built its natural gas distribution system in 1953 for $160,000. CRMU's natural gas is transported by Northern Natural Gas Company, located in Houston, Texas. CRMU purchases natural gas from various suppliers and is able to offer competitive rates for firm and interruptible service.

CRMU also operates a Propane Peak Shaving facilitiy. The Peaking Plant supplies extra gas or supplemental quantities of gas on days when load requirements exceed the natural gas supply.
